Located in the heart of Dumbo, Brooklyn, Almondine Bakery is a charming pastry shop that truly celebrates the art of French baking. This cozy haven, tucked away on 85 Water Street, invites pastry lovers to indulge in an authentic dégustation experience that masterfully balances tradition with heartfelt craftsmanship.
Almondine’s menu is a testament to the delicate precision and rich flavors that define classic pâtisserie. Their almond croissant, a standout favorite, earns rightful acclaim for its flaky, buttery exterior and the richly baked-in almond filling that evokes comparisons to Europe’s finest. As visitor Tina Abraham enthusiastically puts it, “You can taste the authenticity in every flaky, buttery bite,” making it a must-stop for anyone serious about pastry. For those seeking a sweeter variety, the peach Danish and the remarkable 10-layer crepe offer a perfect balance of delicate sweetness without overwhelming the palate, praised by Alex Thomas for their impeccable flavor harmony.
The shop’s pastry selection extends beyond croissants, featuring exquisite choices like the regal chocolate mousse with layers of dacquoise and creameux, the trio alternating dark, milk, and white chocolate mousse, and the chocolate passion tart blending mango cream with rich coconut dacquoise. These sophisticated desserts, priced at $8.45 each, showcase Almondine's dedication to delivering complex textures and deep cocoa notes that leave a lingering impression.
In addition to pastries, Almondine offers a variety of breads, such as their signature Almondine Baguette and multi-grain options, appealing to customers who appreciate both sweet and savory baked goods. Coffee aficionados, however, might find mixed reviews on the cafe’s brew—while the pastries stand unrivaled, several customers noted the coffee as mediocre, suggesting you come primarily for the baked delights. Nonetheless, the shop serves essential accompaniments like cappuccino, café latte, and fresh juices to complete your tasting experience.
Space inside Almondine Bakery is limited, with a snug seating area that exudes quaint charm but encourages a more grab-and-go approach. Eddy G felt the tight quarters but highlighted the friendly staff and the appeal of wandering the picturesque neighborhood surrounding the bakery after picking up a treat. Meanwhile, Hong Lee appreciated the warmth and helpfulness of the service during a relaxed coffee and pastry break, emphasizing the inviting ambiance despite the compact interior.
Almondine Bakery’s true magic lies in its dedication to authenticity and quality. Katie Metselaar sums up the essence well, recommending visitors come “for the pastry and you won’t be disappointed!” It is this precise focus on superior craftsmanship, from the buttery layers of an almond croissant to the delicate crumb of their lemon tarts and cheesecakes, that elevates Almondine to a special place in Brooklyn’s vibrant culinary scene.
Whether you’re a Brooklyn local seeking an exceptional everyday pastry or a visitor yearning for a genuine taste of French baking artistry, Almondine Bakery delivers an experience that’s more than just a quick stop—it’s a journey into the soulful heart of patisserie excellence.
Almondine is a quaint little shop, with some solid pastries, and okay coffee. The space is quite tight, and there isn’t much seating, but luckily the surrounding area is a nice neighborhood to walk around if you’d rather do that. The staff were friendly enough. Overall, a decent spot to stop for a bite and a coffee, but not sure I’d go out of my way for it.
Excellent pastries… Specifically the peach Danish and the 10 layer crepe was perfectly balanced with sweetness… Not too sweet like you would normally find them in other US bakeries. Very fair prices compared to the rest of NY… Cozy seating area. Overall highly recommended for a quick stop & sweet fix!!
Almondine Bakery in Dumbo Brooklyn is the real deal. Their almond croissant is properly made, the almond filling is baked right into the dough, not slapped in after the fact like a sad afterthought. You can taste the authenticity in every flaky, buttery bite. Honestly, it rivals the magic of Patisserie Valerie in Soho, London — and that’s saying something. A must-stop for anyone who takes their pastries seriously (or just wants to feel briefly transported to Europe).
Tale of two halves here. Firstly the pastry, without comparison the best pastry we had in NYC. Delicious almond croissant which had both an exceptional filling and pastry that was so brilliantly crafted, it melted in your mouth. Just had a dreadful coffee at Butler so we walked here for a long black - again poor. So take away point is - go for the pastry and you won’t be disappointed!
After enjoying some fantastic Dominican BBQ food from the Bark Barbeque stall in the 5th floor rooftop foodhall of the Timeout Market we fancied some hot drinks and pastries. So we popped into the delightful Almondine café next door where we had a delicious almond croissant, cafe latte & cuppa tea at one of the small number of tables inside the small café. Our server was very friendly & helpful. There was a display of wonderful looking cakes & pastries inside a refrigerated cabinet in front of a Bakery at the back of the café, so I assumed they must have all been made in house. There's a single toilet at the back of the café and it's probably not suited for people with physical disabilities as the front door is accessed from a flight of steps.
Cozy bakery in DUMBO with an extensive selection. Attentive, professional staff and exquisite food. They have breads, sandwiches, savory (e.g. quiche) and so many delicious sweet offerings. The 10 layer crepe cake (raspberry with cream) was a standout. Also, best latte I've had anywhere!
